Ikea is one of the most popular retailers worldwide, known for its unique retail displays and affordable build-your-own furniture, popular with college students and young professionals. However, the company has recently gone into the smart home business, and it is now finally reaching the shelves of a major market.
Ikea's Matter-compatible smart home collection has been slowly making its way into stores around the world since its announcement last November. Despite some early connectivity problems, one of the most anticipated items in the new Matter collection is the Matter-over-Thread smart bulbs.
Ikea's Matter-compatible devices are finally here
Now, the company did say they would originally hit US store shelves sometime in April 2026, but they are now available through Ikea's online store and at many retail locations across the country.
The new bulbs are called the Kajplats E12 LED bulb, and the line ranges from 450 to 1600 lumens, with a price range of $5.99 to $13.99. There are also starter kits that you can purchase, which come with either a smart white or smart color and white spectrum bulb, alongside the Bilresa remote, which, as mentioned earlier, is in literally every smart home product that Ikea makes.
As The Verge pointed out, smart bulbs have been one of Ikea's most popular smart home products, thanks to their cheaper yet similarly functional alternative to products like Philips Hue bulbs. Its new Matter-compatible smart bulbs are both affordable and available in an optional bundle that could include a wireless remote (which Ikea uses in many of its smart home products).
Some connectivity problems
To go back to the connectivity point, the rollout of the new Matter-compatible smart home collection has reportedly been shaky. Early adopters have noticed problems connecting the devices to both Ikea's own Dirigera hub and to other smart home device platforms like Apple Home and Amazon Alexa. Good news, though, is that Ikea is aware of the problem and is working to address the issues. Earlier this week, Ikea released an update to its hub that includes improvements to "Matter onboarding stability," though it is not yet known whether it resolves the issues with Ikea's Matter-over-Thread devices.
